Westlake football opens the 2026-27 high school season Friday with a bang, hosting Inglewood in a clash of California and Texas powerhouses.
The Chaparrals are one of the premier teams in the Lone Star State, but they took a step back last season, going 7-4 a year after making the 2024-25 UIL Class 6A Division I State title game. The Sentinels are the 10th-ranked team in California high schools’ competitive Southern Section.
Inglewood is a tough matchup for Westlake. Its roster boasts multiple highly touted recruits, including four-star defensive lineman Myels Smith, who’s committed to Texas A&M. But the Chaps are still one of the more talented teams in Central Texas. Offensive lineman Jackson Cook is a Texas commit who should take on Smith in a trench clash of the burnt orange and maroon.

Senior Patton Jones is Westlake’s new starting quarterback. Despite the pressure that comes from a legacy of successful quarterbacks, coach Tony Salazar has expressed confidence in Jones’ ability to command the offense.
The original kickoff time of 7 p.m. has been pushed back due to inclement weather. Here are live updates from Westlake’s matchup against Inglewood:
