This interest or chase should trigger severe caution in East London. Nuno needs defensive reinforcements, obviously. The backline needs sorting. But spending over €30 million on a player with a handful of top-flight appearances in Turkey feels reckless. Unhinged, even.

Yes, Chibuike Nwaiwu boasts an impressive physical frame. He has a dominant aerial presence. He showed great promise during his 16 appearances for Trabzonspor last season, helping them secure the Turkish Cup. Moments of brilliance, sure. But paying such a premium represents an unnecessary roll of the dice for the Hammers. The step up from the Süper Lig to the relentless intensity of the Premier League remains a massive chasm. It is notoriously steep. It breaks players.

Paying over the odds for unproven talent rarely works out in England. Look at past transfer windows. Nuno needs guaranteed starters, men who can hit the ground running immediately, no lengthy adaptation periods. The recruitment team must hold their nerve.
