Week 1 upsets send three newcomers to the pinnacle of LSWA polls

Upset losses by top-ranked Neville, University (3A) and Haynesville (1A) paved the way for several new teams to surge to the top of three class polls in the second Louisiana Sports Writers Association high school football poll after one week of action.

Class 5A No. 1 Ruston demolished Class 4A No. 1 Neville, which sent Westgate to the top of 4A. University’s loss in its opener allowed St. Charles to move to the top and Haynesville’s lopsided loss to Ouachita Christian in 1A sent OCS to the No. 1 position.

Acadiana and Brother Martin moved into the 5A poll for the first time and Cecilia did the same in 4A.

The weekly poll is voted on by a group of sportswriters from around Louisiana.
