Wednesday Season 3 Is A Completely Different Show

While seasons 1 and 2 of Netflix’s Wednesday were content with turning The Addams Family franchise into a magical school story, the Jenna Ortega vehicle is set to become an entirely different beast in its upcoming season 3. When Stranger Things became one of Netflix’s biggest hits ever, it didn’t take long for every other streaming service to try and find their replacement for the show.

While Hulu’s Goosebumps reboot was more family-friendly, HBOMax’s It: Welcome to Derry was gorier and scarier. However, one of the most interesting replacements for Stranger Things came from Netflix itself, as the streaming service launched another massive, globally successful hit the same year that Stranger Things season 4 arrived. In 2022, Netflix took the Stranger Things formula, combining audience nostalgia, a coming-of-age dramedy, small-town mysteries, and genre elements, and used this to build Tim Burton’s take on The Addams Family.

The result was Wednesday, a star vehicle for Scream 2022 star Jenna Ortega that turned the sullen daughter of the Addams clan into the heroine of her own story. While stars like Luiz Guzman and Catherine Zeta-Jones did crop up in the roles of Gomez and Morticia, Wednesday radically moved away from the ensemble storytelling of earlier Addams Family shows and movies. The series transplanted its title character to the magic school Nevermore Academy, where she faced werewolves, gorgons, Hydes (i.e. of Jekyll and Hyde fame), and other outcasts.

Wednesday Is Moving Beyond Nevermore In Season 3

Throughout seasons 1 and 2, Netflix’s massively successful Wednesday played out like a slightly more kid-friendly spin on The Vampire Diaries spinoff Legacies, wherein a teenage heroine encountered all manner of monsters while studying at the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. However, all good things must come to an end, and the lengthy three-year breaks between seasons of Wednesday mean that the Netflix mega hit could not get away with keeping its cast teenagers forever.

In a recent interview with Esquire magazine, Ortega confirmed that Wednesday season 3 would be set during the titular heroine’s senior year. This means the 24-year-old star will be playing a soon-to-graduate 17/ 18-year-old Wednesday, thus ensuring the show isn’t entirely abandoned believability in its casting, even if the presence of werewolves, witches, and magic might allow the series some leeway in this regard.

Moreover, this means that Wednesday season 3 will move beyond the school setting that defined seasons 1 and 2’s stories, and inspired Disney’s transparent Wednesday clone Coven Academy. Furthermore, the fact that Wednesday season 3 was seen shooting in Paris, with stars Ortega and Fred Amisen filming near iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the Seine, proves that the show’s third outing will also take Wednesday abroad for the first time.

At least some of the season will take place in Paris, potentially as part of Wednesday’s attempts to find Enid after her beloved roommate finally turned into a full-blown werewolf to save Wednesday in season 2’s finale. Whatever the cause of the pair’s trans-Atlantic sojourn, this filming location makes it clear that season 3 will not try to center Nevermore Academy and the nearby small town as the show’s lone locations again.

Wednesday Season 1’s Hyde Case Is Finally Over

Furthermore, Wednesday season 3 will also feel entirely different since the show is finally finished with the mystery that defined its story since season 1. While Wednesday found out that Tyler was the Hyde stalking Nevermore back in Wednesday season 1’s finale, she also learned that Christina Ricci’s Laurel Gates, aka Marilyn Thornhill, was the one pulling the strings behind the Hyde’s killings all along.

It seemed like this storyline was wrapped up by season 1’s ending but, in a twist that frustrated a not insubstantial amount of viewers and reviewers alike, Wednesday season 2 kept the subplot alive a lot longer. It turned out that, while Wednesday was trying to tackle new mysteries linked to Nevermore Academy’s shady past, Tyler’s mother, Francoise Galpin, was revealed to be alive and a Hyde as well, while Dr. Stonehearst’s daughter Judi was revealed to be the one continuing his twisted experiments on the school’s outcasts.

Continuing the show’s quirky tradition of casting iconic ’90s teen actors as surprise villains, Heather Matarazzo’s Judi turned out not to be the sweet character she seemed, but rather a monster in disguise, and one much more dangerous than any Hyde. In contrast, this upcoming outing’s story now has no real reason to continue the sprawling Hyde conspiracy, and Wednesday season 3 will likely move on to a new plot, especially when another storyline is commanding most of the show’s attention.

Wednesday & Enid’s Relationship Is Very Different In Season 3

While viewers who hoped to see Wednesday and Enid’s relationship turn into something more than friendship have repeatedly been told that this is unlikely to happen by the creators, the pair’s close bond will still only deepen in season 3. Throughout season 1, the biggest hurdle that Wednesday and Enid faced was their diametrically opposed personalities. By season 2, it was Wednesday’s struggles with expressing her emotions toward her friend that threatened their bond.

However, since Enid transformed into a werewolf during the full moon in Wednesday season 2’s finale, the stakes of the pair’s partnership have now been radically altered. Instead of needing to tell Enid that she cares about her, Wednesday will need to show her by saving her friend from potentially remaining trapped in her werewolf form forever. This is the driving force behind Wednesday’s quest with Uncle Fester.

Senior Year Brings Major Changes To Wednesday

Thus, there are now existential stakes for Wednesday and Enid’s friendship, as Wednesday may well be the only one who can get her friend back to her human form. While this will be the biggest plot point heading into season 3, viewers should not underestimate the impact that Wednesday‘s time jump to the title character’s senior year will have on the show, either.

As Ortega noted to Esquire, senior year is a strange moment in the lives of students, one wherein they are on “the precipice” of adult independence, but still very much schoolchildren. Thus, Wednesday season 3 is likely to feel as much like SyFy’s five-season hit The Magicians as Disney’s Percy Jackson & The Olympians as the show transitions to focusing on a college-age version of Wednesday‘s heroine.
