“Watching Matches Fearing For His Health” – Insider Concerned About Novak Djokovic After Serb’s Physical Struggles In China Open 1R

Tennis insider José Morón recently shared his concern for Novak Djokovic after he struggled physically during his China Open opener. The tournament began on Sept. 28 and will conclude on Oct. 11 at the National Tennis Center in Beijing, China.

Djokovic opened his China Open campaign on Wednesday with a 6-3, 7-6(2) win over Nuno Borges on Diamond Court. During the match, the Serb appeared to struggle physically, using his racquet to stretch his back between games. In the second set, he also took a medical timeout to receive treatment from a trainer on his right shoulder.

Shortly after the match, a video of Djokovic circulated on X showing him discussing his fluctuating energy levels using sign language. Reacting to the video, Morón shared his concern for the 39-year-old, pointing to the physical issues he has faced at several tournaments, including the US Open.

“I have the same feeling as during the past US Open. Personally, it hurts me to see Djokovic like this. His mind wants to, but his body isn’t keeping up with him. He’s capable of producing incredible tennis for almost an hour, but then his energy drops drastically, and we see him suffer. I don’t enjoy seeing him struggle on the court. Nor do I think he does either. I don’t know what the solution to his current problem will be, but I’m already watching Djokovic’s matches fearing for his health, and I might not be the only one who feels that way.”

Novak Djokovic also struggled physically during his opening-round match at the US Open against Mariano Navone. He was seen vomiting courtside multiple times during the match, while his physical condition deteriorated in the fourth set as he dealt with intense muscle cramping and required medical intervention for his back and shoulder.

After a four-hour and 36-minute battle at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Djokovic lost to Navone, marking his first opening-round defeat at a Grand Slam since the 2006 Australian Open.

After his early exit from the US Open, Novak Djokovic reflected on the physical problems he experienced during the match. He revealed that he had struggled physically in almost every match that season and described the experience as “awful” during his post-match press conference:

“I think it was obvious that it was an awful feeling on the court for me. It’s something that I’ve been carrying, unfortunately, pretty much every match this year, you know, vomiting, throwing up, serious issue there. And then my whole body starts to collapse, basically, cramping and pain. Yeah, the back just gave up in the end, and the shoulder, and I couldn’t close it out. I was a break up in the fourth, but just struggled all the way, since the fourth game of the match,” said Novak Djokovic.

“When it comes to the match itself and the overall feeling of how I felt with my body and playing, it was really not enjoyable, and I pretty much despised every moment that I spent on the court for that.”

Despite his physical struggles, the Serb said he appreciated the support from the crowd, adding that their love and appreciation touched his heart.

Novak Djokovic is now scheduled to face Yunchaokete Bu in the China Open round of 16 on Friday.
