Lionel Messi reached another remarkable career milestone after curling home a stunning free kick for Inter Miami against San Diego FC on Sunday night.
The Argentine was fouled just outside the box before stepping up to produce another trademark set-piece finish, finding the net in the 24th minute.
Inter Miami had fallen behind early after Anders Dreyer opened the scoring for San Diego in the 12th minute. Messi quickly responded, however, whipping the free kick around goalkeeper CJ dos Santos and off the post before it went in.

The goal was Messi’s 20th in the 2026 MLS season, keeping him at the top of the league’s scoring charts. It also came just days after he scored his 100th goal for Inter Miami during the club’s Campeones Cup victory over Cruz Azul.
Messi’s latest effort took his Inter Miami tally to 101 goals and his career total to 930.
The 39-year-old has also continued to contribute beyond his goals, recording 11 assists in 22 MLS appearances this season. He had scored in three consecutive matches, while contributing either a goal or assist in eight straight games.
Inter Miami eventually took the lead through Luis Suarez in the 74th minute, but San Diego hit back late through Dreyer for his second goal of the night.
The 2-2 draw extended Inter Miami’s winless MLS run to four matches, with the club having last won a league game on August 29 against Montreal.
Messi had chances to find a winner, including three shots in the final six minutes, but San Diego goalkeeper dos Santos kept him out each time.
Inter Miami remain third in the Eastern Conference with 46 points and will return to MLS action against the Columbus Crew on September 27. For Messi, the chase towards 1,000 career goals continues, with another landmark already added to an extraordinary 2026 campaign.
