Rhian Edmunds’ Commonwealth Games campaign came to an abrupt end when the Welsh cyclist crashed heavily in her opening keirin heat on the final day of competition.

Edmunds, 23, was ruled out of the keirin repechage as she is not fit to race, meaning she leaves Glasgow with one gold and one bronze medal.

The crash also involved Scotland’s Lauren Bell, who also was helped from the track after treatment.

Emma Finucane, aiming for an historic fourth Games gold in Glasgow, eased through to the next round by winning her heat and Lowri Thomas qualified through the repechage.

William Salter, William Perrett and William Roberts qualified for the men’s 40km points race.

Steffan Lloyd (sixth), Rhys Britton (11th) and Jonah Jenkins (13th) finished outside the medals in the men’s 1,000m time trial final.

Lloyd was one of the men’s team sprint riders, along with Lewis Oliva, who were on the start line on the opening line for the bronze medal race against Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday night but did not race.

This was because team-mate Ioan Hepburn was ruled out because of illness.

Lloyd backed the decision not to race but admitted it was a unique experience.

“I’ve had a bit of a funny few days,” said Lloyd. “The team sprint, we had a high and then ended in a bit of a low.

“I don’t know if it’s happened before. We did the right thing. Our team-mate’s health is top priority and I’m glad we didn’t do it.

“But reflecting on it now, I got really hyped up for the race and then there was nothing.

“I’ve been struggling the past few days. I just sat down with my coach and team-mates and figured out maybe why I was feeling a bit off. Just acknowledging that has helped me.

“I’ve kind of figured out what that was and came back today and felt like myself and smashed it.”

Anna Morris failed to add to her tally of two gold and one bronze as she finished outside the medals in the elimination race alongside Jessica Roberts and Carys Lloyd.
