Louisville (2-1) came up with the win it absolutely had to have last week, taking down SMU in a 41-31 thriller. There’s a great chance the Mustangs were the toughest team the Cardinals have to face the rest of the way.
As we know from the recent run of College Football Playoffs, get to 10-2 from a Power Four conference, and you have a chance. Get to 11-1 – especially with a trip to a conference championship – and you’re good.

Why Wake Forest Will Win
Gio Lopez has been the exact right quarterback for the Demon Deacon offense. He’s running well, and he’s making the right decisions, spreading the ball around like the veteran he is.
He has to go off against a leaky Louisville secondary that got hit hard by Trinidad Chambliss of Ole Miss and SMU’s Kevin Jennings. If Lopez gets time to work, he’ll be terrific.
Why Louisville Will Win
The Wake Forest pass defense hasn’t been remotely close so far. Akron, Purdue, and Miami combined to complete 83% of their passes against the Demon Deacon defense that has just one takeaway and no interceptions.
The Cardinals, with Ohio State transfer quarterback Lincoln Kienholz, are running well, throwing better, and should be able to move the offense however they want to. There’s a tremendous balance, with enough explosion to make Wake Forest press.

Wake Forest finds ways to stay in games under head coach Jake Dickert. It hung around with Purdue, and then found a way to pull it off late. It lost to Miami, but it stayed in the game.
Louisville gets hit with too many penalties, but it has yet to turn the ball over. As long as it doesn’t lose the turnover margin, it’ll be fine. If it gives the ball away a few times, Wake Forest gets this. Again, the Demon Deacons have forced one takeaway all year.
