VOTE NOW for The Star Press IU Health Athlete of the Week for June 3-8

The time has come to vote for The Star Press East Central Indiana high school Athlete of the Week, brought to you by IU Health.

The reigning Athlete of the Week is Monroe Central baseball player Caleb Luedike. Luedike put together an elite two-way performance in Monroe Central’s 16-1 sectional championship victory over Cambridge City Lincoln on Monday, June 1. He went 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and was even better on the mound, giving up one unearned run on two hits and one walk while striking out nine to lead the Golden Bears to their first sectional title in 12 years. He received 16,158 votes out of 29,885 votes cast (54.07%).

This week’s poll brings us more 10 nominees from the week of Wednesday, June 3, through Monday, June 8. This week’s poll is on an altered timeline in order to include boys golf sectional results from Monday, June 8. The poll will remain open until noon Saturday, June 13. You may vote as many times as you’d like. Please vote using the poll found by scrolling to the bottom of this page — votes submitted via email will not be counted.

Here’s a quick look at this week’s nominees:

• Stella Sieber, Delta girls tennis: Sieber won both of her matches at No. 3 singles at the IHSAA girls tennis state finals on Friday, June 5. She won 6-1, 7-6 (1) in her first match to clinch a 3-2 quarterfinals victory for the Eagles over No. 8 Munster, then won her second match 6-1, 6-1 to represent the Eagles’ only win in a 4-1 loss to Carmel in the state semifinals.

• Reese Backus, Delta girls track and field: Backus was the only female athlete from East Central Indiana to earn all-state honors at the IHSAA girls track and field state finals on Friday, June 5. She set a new Delta school record in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, good for a fifth-place finish at state.

• Mairin Gesler, Yorktown girls track and field: A state qualifier in both the shot put and discus throws, Gesler placed 20th out of 29 in the shot put with a throw of 37-5.75 feet and placed 26th out of 30 in the discus with a throw of 109 feet at the IHSAA girls track and field state finals on Friday, June 5.

• Isaac Middleton, Monroe Central baseball: Middleton scored the lone run for the Golden Bears with a solo homer during a 9-1 loss to North Miami in an IHSAA regional championship on Saturday, June 6.

• Cale Taylor, Delta baseball: Taylor went 2-for-3 at the plate with doubles on both hits and drove in one RBI during the Eagles’ 4-2 loss to Norwell in an IHSAA regional championship on Saturday, June 6.

• Carter Campbell, Winchester Community boys track and field: Campbell was an all-state performer in the 300-meter hurdles for the second year in a row. He placed third in the event with a time of 38 seconds at the IHSAA boys track and field state finals on Saturday, June 6.

• Lucas Eaton, New Castle boys track and field: New Castle senior Lucas Eaton earned all-state honors in the high jump with a fourth-place finish, clearing the bar at 6-6 feet on his first attempt at the IHSAA boys track and field state finals on Saturday, June 6.

• Jackson Foster, Muncie Central boys track and field: Foster represented the Bearcats at state in the discus throw, setting a new personal best with a distance of 158-09 feet to place 18th out of 29 at the IHSAA boys track and field state finals on Saturday, June 6.

• Maddox Taylor, Monroe Central boys golf: Taylor shot a 1-over-par 71 at Hickory Hills Golf Club on Monday, June 8, to earn low medalist honors at Sectional 19 and lead the Golden Bears to their first IHSAA boys golf sectional championship since 2021.

• Nate Schaal-Deresh, Yorktown boys golf: Schaal-Deresh shot a 76 at Hickory Hills Golf Club on Monday, June 8, to finish third individually at Sectional 19 and help Yorktown advance to a regional. After a tough front nine for all five members of the Tigers’ lineup, Schaal-Deresh birdied three consecutive holes on 10, 11 and 12 to give the team some momentum and help them fight back into the top three teams.
