Vote for the Register female Athlete of the Week for Sept. 13-19

The week of Sept. 13-19 was another one full of exciting high school female sports action featuring athletes from the Des Moines metro area.

The week saw Class 4A No. 1 Waukee Northwest down No. 4 Dowling Catholic in a thrilling five-set high school volleyball battle (25-19, 15-25, 24-26, 25-23, 15-11) on Sept. 17 in West Des Moines. Dallas Center-Grimes, the No. 2 team in 5A, remained undefeated, pushing its record to 23-0 after winning the Benton Invitational on Sept. 19.

In girls cross country, teams from the metro area competed at the Heartland Classic in Pella and the Roy Griak Invitational in St. Paul, Minn. on Sept. 19. It was also a full week for high school girls tennis and swimming and diving.

There were several standout individual performances by high school female athletes from the metro area during the week.

Vogt came up huge for the 5A No. 1 Waukee Northwest volleyball team during its five-set victory at No. 4 Dowling Catholic on Sept. 17 in West Des Moines.

Vogt slammed down 21 kills on 30% efficiency. She added 16 digs and two aces to help the Wolves prevail.

Wharton placed the highest among all high school girls cross country runners from the metro area competing in the 5-kilometer high school girls race at the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 19 at the Fort Snelling Golf Course in St. Paul, Minn.

Wharton took 12th during the race. She crossed the finish line in 17 minutes, 55.2 seconds to help Johnston finish fourth in the team standings.

Farley was masterful at setter in helping the 5A No. 2 DCG volleyball team roll to four sweeps at the Benton Invitational on Sept. 19 at Benton.

Farley handed out 20 assists, and she added eight digs against both 4A No. 14 Burlington and 4A No. 4 Marion in respective 21-5, 21-18 and 21-17, 21-17 sweeps over the Grayhounds and Wolves. Farley tallied 12 assists, three digs and two aces in a dominant 21-7, 21-9 sweep over 4A No. 15 Grinnell, and she tacked on 23 assists and five digs in a 25-20, 25-9 sweep of 4A No. 9 Bondurant-Farrar.

From picked up a win in the No. 1 singles match and she helped the Roughriders win the No. 1 doubles match during their 7-4 girls tennis victory over Ankeny on Sept. 14 at the McCollum Waveland Tennis Complex in Des Moines.

From swept Ankeny’s Ella Dietrich in straight sets during the No. 1 singles match by scores of 6-4 and 6-3. She teamed with Charlotte Kelderman to sweep Dietrich and Jaleigh Moen in the No. 1 doubles match; 6-3, 6-2.

Weinheimer took first in both the 100-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke races for the Des Moines North girls swimming and diving team during a 113-57 dual victory over Fort Dodge on Sept. 15 at Fort Dodge.

Weinheimer won the 100 freestyle 55.66 seconds, which was over seven seconds faster than her nearest competitor. She took first in the breaststroke with a 1:13.54, which was 4.51 seconds faster than the rest of the field.
