The Minnesota Vikings made an early quarterback decision on Wednesday, announcing that Kyler Murray will be the QB1 in the early stages of the season, at the very least. 

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Murray won the job, considering how poorly J.J. McCarthy has played at times in his young career, but it definitely raises a lot of questions about why and how this got to where it is. 

McCarthy has done a decent job of being present and saying the right things to the media, but according to the latest report, his relationship with head coach Kevin O’Connell isn’t good. In fact, it sounds like McCarthy often questioned his head coach.

“When O’Connell made coaching points, sources say, McCarthy too often pushed back: Why don’t we do it this way?. An acceptable rebuttal for a veteran quarterback with a full library of game reps to his name. Not so much for a novice who barely threw the ball in college. The head coach doing all of the teaching has pelts on the wall, too.” Tyler Dunne wrote.

If there’s one coach in the NFL who probably doesn’t deserve to be questioned when it comes to quarterback play, it’s O’Connell. 

He’s shown over the past few years that he can make it work with almost anybody, so the fact that he and McCarthy seemingly didn’t get along and still don’t is more of an indication of McCarthy than anybody else.
