Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was back in action in the Duleep Trophy final for East Zone against South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
The semi-final against Central Zone in Bengaluru is the innings that’s still being discussed. Sooryavanshi arrived at the crease with East Zone chasing Central Zone’s first-innings total and immediately went on the attack.
He reached his fifty off just 42 deliveries, but was eventually dismissed for 92, eight runs shy of what would have been a stunning debut first-class century.
The round before had been a quieter affair with the bat, as he scored just eight runs as East Zone rolled past North East Zone by an innings and 210 runs in a lopsided contest.
What he couldn’t do with the bat that day, though, he made up for in an unexpected way. Captain Ishan Kishan tossed the ball to his teenage left-arm spinner, and Sooryavanshi delivered two wickets in a single over, finishing with figures of 2 for 11 across three overs.
