There were a lot of spectacular tennis highlights in the all-American US Open semifinal between Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe.
Despite Tiafoe winning the first set, Shelton ultimately prevailed in the four set physical match, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5.
Shelton is known for his lightning fast serves, but one in particular caught everyone’s attention.
Shelton’s 158 mph serve
Though recorded on court at a blistering 158 miles per hour, which would be the fastest ever in US Open history, the USTA later provided a corrected reading.
The USTA, along with Hawk-Eye technology, later said the serve speed was 144 miles per hour.
To his credit, that is still an outrageously fast serve.
No one has provided an explanation for the disparity.

Shelton can still make history
Though his serve did not put him in the US Open history books, Shelton will get there if he wins the 2026 US Open. Shelton would be the first American man to win a Grand Slam title since Andy Roddick won the US Open in 2003.
He plays Alexander Zverev on Sunday, September 13 at 2 PM EDT. Zverev has never lost to Shelton in five previous meetings. Their last match was in November 2025 at the ATP Finals.
That head-to-head record may render meaningless because Shelton improved his game in the 2026 season.
Good luck charm Trinity Rodman has a Sunday soccer match
Shelton’s girlfriend, Trinity Rodman, an accomplished professional athlete in her own right, has been in the stands for some of his biggest wins.
Her Washington Spirit soccer team has a 1 PM EDT match on Sunday, September 13 at home in DC. Shelton’s match will begin around 2 PM EDT in New York City.
No one knows exactly how she will manage it, but we know Rodman will figure out a way to support Shelton in the biggest match of his career.
