US President Donald Trump has congratulated the Democratic Party following its victories in the midterm elections, which saw the party take control of both chambers of Congress.
Trump, however, dismissed suggestions that the outcome represented a rejection of his leadership.
Fox News reports that the president made the remarks while reacting to the Democrats’ gains in the Senate and House of Representatives.
“Congratulations to the Democrats. They did a good job. They’ve been looking for this one for 11 years, and they finally got it.
“But I don’t view it as a hit on me. I think we’ve done … We’ve had the greatest two years in the history of the presidency,” Trump said.
DAILY POST reports that Democrats have secured 51 seats in the Senate, wresting control of the chamber from Republicans.
The party also recorded victories in traditionally Republican-leaning states, including Texas, South Carolina, Iowa and Kansas.
In the House of Representatives, Democrats are projected to win at least 235 seats, surpassing the 218 required for a majority, according to CNBC’s Election Desk.
The party also flipped several Republican-held Senate seats in Iowa, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, and Texas.
The victories represent a major setback for Trump and the Republican Party, which had controlled both chambers of Congress.
