UNIJOS SUG update on aftermath of Students' Protest

Calm has returned to the Naraguta Campus of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) after students staged a protest and locked the main school gates earlier today, demanding immediate action over a prolonged electricity outage in the campus hostels.

The demonstration, which temporarily halted movement into and out of the university environment, was sparked by a 48-hour total blackout that severely affected the welfare, safety, and academic productivity of the resident students.

In the wake of the demonstration, the UNIJOS Students’ Union Government (SUG) released an official press statement to address the situation. While clarifying that the protest was not organized or initiated by the union leadership, the SUG emphasized that they fully understood and shared the genuine frustrations of the student body.

The situation was brought under control following rapid, high-level interventions from key university officials, including:

Engagements between these authorities and the aggrieved students helped de-escalate tensions, leading to the peaceful reopening of the Naraguta campus gates.

The SUG, led by President Younglan Talyoung and Secretary General Vincent Philip Yisa, has officially confirmed that the university management has fulfilled its immediate commitment. Electricity has now been successfully restored across the entire campus and all affected hostels.

The Union executives assured the student populace that they will remain committed to prioritizing student welfare and will maintain active communication lines with management to prevent future occurrences of such prolonged power outages.
