UNICROSS issues warning over unauthorized social media publications

The attention of the Student Affairs Division has been drawn to an unauthorized publication circulating on social media platforms titled “PRESS RELEASE FROM CONCERNED STUDENTS OF UNIVERSITY OF CROSS RIVER STATE (UNICROSS)” issued through external communication channels (including WhatsApp media links under the identifier “Excavator”). The publication contains political declarations, ultimatums relating to local industrial matters, and representations purportedly made on behalf of students of the University while also carrying institutional insignia.

The Student Affairs Division wishes to state unequivocally that while students retain the right to lawful and constructive engagement within the University system, all forms of public communication relating to the University are regulated by established institutional procedures.

According to Section 2.7 (Students’ Publication) of the approved UNICROSS Undergraduate Students’ Handbook (2025/2026 Session), it is expressly provided that:

”Students seeking to publish notices, letters, or articles in print or electronic media on matters relating to the University must obtain prior clearance from the Registrar or the Dean of Student Affairs Division.”

Furthermore, the Handbook provides that authors shall be held personally accountable for any publication deemed libelous, scandalous, misleading, or injurious to the integrity of the institution. It also stipulates that the display, circulation, or dissemination of physical or electronic notices, flyers, posters, and publications must be carried out only with due administrative approval and through designated channels.

For avoidance of doubt, intended publications are to be submitted to the appropriate Student Affairs Office at least forty-eight (48) hours before circulation.

The Student Affairs Division further notes that operating under unregistered, unauthorized, or unrecognized platforms or identities, including bodies described as “Concerned Students,” to issue statements capable of affecting institutional peace, reputation, governance, or public perception constitutes a violation of Sections 2.3.2 and 2.7 of the Students’ Handbook and may amount to serious misconduct.

Consequently, all students, associations, and organized groups are hereby directed to desist from drafting, authorizing, signing, circulating, or broadcasting unauthorized press releases, public notices, media statements, or publications using the University’s name, logo, identity, or purporting to speak on behalf of the student body without prior written clearance from the Office of the Registrar or the Student Affairs Division.

Any student or group of students found violating these provisions shall be liable to disciplinary action in accordance with extant University regulations and the recommendations of the appropriate disciplinary authorities, which may include suspension, rustication, or expulsion, depending on the gravity of the offence.

Students are advised to be properly guided and comply strictly with established communication procedures in order to avoid disciplinary sanctions.
