UNICEF urges FG, Borno to secure release of 78 abducted schoolchildren

The UNICEF official disclosed that the organisation had been working with the Borno State Government to strengthen and implement measures under the Safe Schools framework.

She, however, acknowledged that protecting schools remained closely connected to the wider security situation in the country, making the challenge more complex.

Khan said UNICEF was joining other stakeholders in calling for concerted action to ensure that the abducted children were released.

She also pledged UNICEF’s support for the children once they regained their freedom, particularly in helping them recover from the psychological and physical effects of their ordeal.

According to her, the organisation would work with the government to facilitate their reintegration into their families and communities and provide necessary psychosocial, health and nutritional support.

Khan maintained that the primary responsibility for protecting children and securing their release rested with the Nigerian government.

“At the end of the day, they are Nigerian children, so it is the ultimate responsibility of the government of Nigeria to make sure that, first, they are not abducted, and secondly, put all the effort to release those children back to their families,” she said.

The latest appeal comes amid continuing concerns over attacks on schools and the safety of learners in parts of northern Nigeria, where insecurity has disrupted education and forced some children out of school.
