Aston Villa boss Unai Emery is one of Manchester United’s ‘dream’ candidates to replace Michael Carrick in the Old Trafford dugout, according to The Independent.
Slumping to what was an infamous 4-1 Champions League drumming away at Como on Wednesday evening, the writing appears to be on the wall for Carrick following a nightmare start to the 2026/27 campaign.
While Carrick might have enjoyed a sensational return to United back in January as the Red Devils clinched a bronze medal finish among England’s elite last season and booked a lucrative Champions League return, the 45-year-old has seen his squad come crashing back down to earth in a remarkable fashion this time around.
Failing to win any of their previous seven consecutive appearances across all competitions and scrapping it out in the bottom-half of the Premier League standings, Carrick’s position at Old Trafford has now become almost untenable.
With United skipper Bruno Fernandes launching a sensational attack on his boss following Wednesday’s 4-1 defeat in Italy, The Independent are reporting that Emery is regarded as one of their ‘dream’ options to replace Carrick.
Guiding Aston Villa to Europa League success back in May, the one-time Arsenal manager has overseen a famous spell since arriving in the Midlands back in 2022.
Watching Villa win all of their opening three Champions League appearances this season, the Manchester United hierarchy have been a long-term admirer of the 54-year-old.
Alongside Emery, The Independent are also suggesting that ex-Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is also in contention over a Premier League return.
🚨 Unai Emery would be one of #mufc ‘dream’ candidate to replace Michael Carrick if they make a change.
Eddie Howe wants a break but would also be running. Other candidates here. Carrick hanging by a thread… 👇
