UFC champion Carlos Ulberg targets return after winning title with torn ACL

UFC light heavyweight champion Carlos Ulberg has shared plans to make his return to the Octagon early next year, following a knee injury he sustained at UFC 327.

Ulberg (15-1) suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during his championship victory over Jiří Procházka (32-6-1) in early April. The moment came when Ulberg landed a left hook, knocking Procházka down. As the fighters traded blows, Ulberg’s knee buckled when he stepped backward and slipped on the canvas.

Despite sustaining a torn ACL in the first round, Ulberg went on to claim the 205-pound title, earning the sixth knockout victory of his career.

“I’m focused on getting myself healthy so I can come back and defend my title early next year,” Ulberg told reporters ahead of the UFC Fight Night card in Shanghai, according to ESPN. “The recovery process has been challenging, but I’m motivated every day by the thought of returning to the octagon stronger than ever.”

Ulberg underwent reconstructive surgery a week after the injury, with doctors repairing a complete rupture of the ligament. Recovery from an ACL reconstruction surgery typically takes nine to 12 months and requires extensive rehabilitation.

“Right now, it’s guarding the ACL, guarding my knee, so that when I come back, everything is in good order,” Ulberg said. “I know myself; when I come back, I am going to be stronger mentally and physically.”
