UBA foundation announces N41.5m grants for 2026 national essay competition

All five grants are intended to support the winners’ university education at any African university of their choice, providing the students with financial assistance as they progress to higher education.

The expansion of the prize structure marks a significant change in the 2026 edition of the National Essay Competition, particularly with the inclusion of the fourth- and fifth-place winners among beneficiaries of educational grants.

The initiative has, over the years, provided secondary school students with a platform to articulate their views on issues of national and global importance while developing their writing and analytical abilities.

Beyond the competitive aspect, the programme also seeks to encourage young people to develop confidence in expressing their ideas and engaging critically with issues affecting society.

By linking the competition to university education, the Foundation is also providing winners with financial support that can contribute to their academic progression beyond secondary school.

The N41.5 million package covers the educational grants and prizes for the top five winners, with the increased first-place award and the introduction of grants for fourth and fifth place forming the major changes in this year’s edition.

Commenting on the initiative, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UBA Foundation, Bola Atta, said the competition reflects the Foundation’s commitment to empowering young Nigerians to contribute meaningfully to national development.

Atta said the National Essay Competition has remained an important platform for secondary school students to express their ideas and demonstrate their intellectual abilities.

“For well over a decade, the National Essay Competition has provided a vital platform for our secondary school students to express their ideas and showcase their intellectual prowess,” she said.

The competition’s continued focus on creativity, writing skills and critical thinking comes as students prepare for the transition from secondary education to university-level learning, where analytical and communication skills remain essential.

The 2026 edition therefore combines academic expression with financial support, giving students an opportunity to compete nationally while potentially securing substantial assistance towards their university education.

With the extension of educational grants to the fourth- and fifth-place winners, UBA Foundation has also broadened the financial benefits available through the competition.
