U.S. Open fans removed for heckling Wyndham Clark during final round at Shinnecock

Wyndham Clark’s adversity at Shinnecock Hills on Sunday has been amplified — both on the course and in the gallery.

NBC reported that hecklers have been removed by police for shouting at the 2023 U.S. Open winner during his final round.

Clark, who is carrying a two-shot lead over Sam Burns after opening his back nine birdie-par, bogeyed three times to start the day.

At the first hole, the Long Island crowd serenade his playing partner Scottie Scheffler with “Happy Birthday” to set the tone. Clark went on to card a 38 on the front nine, seeing his once six-shot lead narrow down to just a shot at one point.

Crowd noise might have factored into those early bogeys — and Clark’s wire to wire pursuit. Nobody will ever know the answer definitively.

What cannot be denied is its the second time in 10 months where rowdiness from a New York golf crowd has teetered on the point of ugliness.
