Barcelona know who their goalkeepers will be next season, which is why finding a solution for Marc-Andre ter Stegen is proving to be a massive headache.

It has been known for a while that the German goalkeeper’s future remains one of the most delicate issues facing the club this summer.

Since Joan Garcia will be Barcelona’s long-term No. 1 and Wojciech Szczęsny is expected to continue as backup, Ter Stegen’s situation remains unresolved.

Right now, the Blaugrana are open to move on from the veteran goalkeeper, but several factors are making that objective far more difficult than expected.

Barcelona have decided their goalkeeping hierarchy

What is certain regarding Barcelona’s goalkeeping position is that there is little uncertainty regarding the pecking order between the posts.

Barcelona view Joan Garcia as the goalkeeper who should lead the team moving forward, while Szczęsny is expected to remain part of the squad as an experienced second-choice option.

That leaves Ter Stegen in an awkward position. Once considered one of the club’s most untouchable players, the German is no longer central to Barcelona’s plans.

Notably, the club would welcome an exit that reduces the wage bill and creates additional financial flexibility for future squad-building decisions.

However, wanting to sell a player and actually selling him are two very different things.

Barcelona are struggling to find a solution

According to SER, the biggest obstacles are Ter Stegen’s salary and concerns surrounding his physical condition.

Potential suitors are reportedly reluctant to commit to the financial package required to sign the goalkeeper, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding his fitness.

As a result, Barcelona are exploring alternative solutions.

One possibility is another loan move, while the club have also not ruled out negotiating a mutual contract termination if no satisfactory transfer offers arrive, although neither option is ideal.

A loan would likely mean Barcelona continuing to cover part of the goalkeeper’s wages, while a contract termination could involve a costly settlement agreement.

Nevertheless, both scenarios remain on the table as the club assesses the market.

Ajax could offer Barcelona a lifeline

One route that has not disappeared is Ajax.

The Dutch giants have emerged as a potential destination largely because of Michel’s admiration for the goalkeeper.

The coach, who previously worked with Ter Stegen during his loan spell at Girona, remains a strong supporter of the German and would welcome a reunion in Amsterdam.

Had Girona avoided relegation, another season there may have been a realistic possibility, although that avenue has now closed, and Ajax continue to monitor the situation.

Even so, any deal would still require a solution regarding Ter Stegen’s salary, while Barcelona would likely need assurances about his physical condition before serious negotiations could progress.
