The Minnesota Twins are 30-35 this season, and while they might be widely viewed as clear trade deadline sellers, they could still sneak into the postseason.

But, to do so, they need a bit more offensive production. Fortunately, the Twins are getting back a key slugger after a brief but impressive minor league stint.

According to Twins insider Aaron Gleeman, the Twins have recalled Royce Lewis from Triple-A St. Paul, and to make room on the MLB roster, they’ve designated for assignment former Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder James Outman.

Twins DFA James Outman, recall Royce Lewis

“Twins have called up Royce Lewis from Triple-A St. Paul,” Gleeman reports. “James Outman was designated for assignment to make room on the roster.”

This season, Outman hasn’t been very productive for the Twins in limited opportunities. In 49 games played, but only 17 starts and with only 64 at-bats, Outman has a .156 batting average with 10 hits, nine runs scored, four doubles, one triple, and a .479 OPS.

Those just aren’t good enough statistics for the Twins to justify keeping him on the big league roster, and being designated for assignment makes a lot of sense.

Lewis is joining the MLB roster after a wildly successful stint in the minors. In 15 games and across 60 at-bats, Lewis had a .333 batting average with a 1.303 OPS.

He had 13 strikeouts and five walks, but hit 10 homers and four doubles with 22 RBIs. Hitting 10 home runs in 60 at-bats is a wild level of production for Lewis.

While he’s almost surely not going to be such an elite hitter back up in the Majors, if he can tap into such a hot streak and put his .540 OPS start to the big league season behind him, Lewis could be a key cog of this offense this summer.
