Both leaders praised each other during remarks over tea in the White House Red Room. “America is very happy about this visit,” Trump stated. “I’m sure China is very happy also.”
Xi said China-U.S. relations had developed into a state of “strategic stability,” saying he looks forward to meeting Trump at the APEC summit in China and the G20 summit in Miami.
The Chinese leader’s visit coincided with the ongoing 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, but Xi did not attend the world leaders’ gathering.
