Trump mulls renaming New Mexico ‘New America’

United States President Donald Trump has proposed a move to rename the state of New Mexico as ‘New America.’

Trump made the suggestion in a post on his Truth Social on Sunday, claiming to have received a proposal for the state to be given a new name. 

The state governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, however, swiftly rejected the President’s move.

Trump wrote, “Many people suggested changing the name of New Mexico… to ‘New America. So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State. Wow, I love it.”

After Trump’s proposal, the White House reposted an image of the state’s name with ‘Mexico’ crossed out and replaced with ‘America’.

According to US media reports, the suggestion originated as an internet hoax before being amplified by Trump.

Reacting, Grisham, who immediately rejected the idea while speaking to Fox News, said the state’s name was not open for discussion.

“The name isn’t up for debate — it’s been ours since before the United States existed,” she said.

The governor also alleged that President Trump was trying to distract Americans from pressing issues, including rising petrol prices.

This new development from the President came after a series of controversial attempts to rename prominent geographical features.

Recall that Trump, last week, suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz as “Trump Strait” following the ongoing war with Iran, although he later appeared to indicate that he was not serious about the idea.

DAILY POST reports that in 2025, shortly after returning to the White House, Trump ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed the “Gulf of America”, a move rejected by Mexico.
