Troy Aikman says there's a "50-50 chance" he won't be working in TV next year

· · 1 min read

Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman appeared at a Dallas event on Wednesday night with Peter King, in connection with Peter’s new book, The Game. During the session, Aikman addressed whether he’d be calling NFL games in 2027. Along the way, Aikman addressed the Babar in the bookstore.

Via veteran sports journalist Tim Cowlishaw, Aikman said there’s a “50-50 chance” that Aikman won’t be working in TV next year.

Given the circumstances, that seems accurate. Aikman’s contract expires after the Super Bowl, and he has not been bashful when it comes to expressing concern (and exasperation) with ESPN’s lack of interest in negotiating an extension.

If he leaves ESPN, where else will he go? With CBS already deciding to make J.J. Watt the replacement for Tony Romo, a prime seat will be available for Aikman only if Prime Video opts to exercise its ability to buy out Kirk Herbstreit and pivot to Aikman.

It’s no surprise, then, that Aikman has been talking about possibly working for the Cowboys. He has spoken about wanting to work in a front office, and his consulting gig with the Dolphins may have been the first step toward a Matt Millen/John Lynch-style pivot.
