Triumph Announces New Moto2 Engine For 2027

Lighter and more powerful engine on the way

MotoGP is set to begin a new era, first with the premier class switching to a new 850cc displacement for 2027, and Yamaha becoming the sole motor and chassis supplier for Moto3 in 2028. Not to be left out, change is coming to the Moto2 class, with Triumph announcing a new spec engine will debut for the 2027 season.

Triumph, which has been supplying engines for the Moto2 class since 2019, says the new engine is the product of over a million miles of racing data and rider feedback. The focus of development is on increasing air flow into the cylinders, resulting in a new cylinder head with a redesigned low-inertia valvetrain and higher flow ports. The combustion chamber has also been redesigned, resulting in a higher compression ratio and increased torque across the rev range. Triumph claims the new engine will produce 6% more peak power than the current Moto2 engine.

The crankcases and other internal parts have also been redesigned to handle the added power and torque to maintain reliability. The engine changes will require chassis manufacturers to adapt to the new air intake positioning and engine mounting points. With these changes, Triumph claims the new engine will weigh 4.4 pounds lighter than the existing engine. And while the engine will remain an inline-Triple, the displacement will have changed, though Triumph won’t reveal the new capacity just yet.

Triumph’s announcement focuses entirely on the Moto2 race engine, but it does open the question of whether the 765cc production engine used on the Street Triple. The current race engine is derived from the production Triple, and Triumph will likely want to maintain the marketing advantage of having a connection between prototype and production engines. It is worth noting that the only version of the model currently approved for 2027 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to use the existing 765cc engine is the Street Triple 765 RX. As of this writing, the EPA has not certified a 2027 Street Triple RS, R, or Moto2 Edition, which may be a clue that a new version of the production engine is on its way.

Ahead of this weekend’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Triumph Motorcycles, together with MotoGP, has revealed an exciting upgrade to the engine that powers the Moto2™ World Championship.

Triumph has powered the Moto2 World Championship since 2019, and this announcement is a significant milestone in the collaboration between Triumph Motorcycles and MotoGP. Delivering a significant step forward for the series, the new, higher-powered race engine will join the grid beginning in 2027.

Over the years, Triumph Motorcycles and MotoGP have been committed to revolutionizing the intermediate class since the engines, as seen in the Street Triple 765 RS, were introduced. The data captured from covering a total of 1,196,843 miles (1,926,132kms) and hearing rider feedback firsthand has all aided in improving the Triumph package.

In more recent years, the 765cc race engine has seen vigorous updates to the gearbox, with more power extracted. Together with other partners of the Moto2 World Championship lap records have been rewritten, with just short of 100 all-time and race lap records being surpassed across the eight seasons of competition.

The Moto2™ World Championship has been a breeding ground for the next generation of MotoGP talent, and since Triumph’s involvement, has seen a number of world-class Grand Prix race winners hone their skills with the Triumph 765cc engine and progress to the premier class – something the British powerhouse remains excited to watch develop in years to come.

Delivering More Power

To develop the new, higher-powered race engine, Triumph has taken the learnings from nearly two million kms of racing in the Moto2 World Championship since 2019 and has honed and refined the already competitive engine to deliver more performance and closer racing.

The focus has been in achieving a higher air flow into the cylinders. A new cylinder head, with completely redesigned low-inertia valvetrain and higher flow ports and a new combustion chamber design all help to produce a higher compression ratio with more torque throughout the rev range.

Triumph has also redesigned the crankcases and all internal components to cope with the additional power and torque, ensuring maximum reliability once this power unit hits the track. Together, the changes also deliver an overall weight reduction of 4.4lbs (2kg). Everything has been re-optimized with one goal in mind, higher performance to create a new era of middle-class racing.

The British Manufacturer is eager to see lap time records continue to be eclipsed in 2027 and beyond, as the higher-powered race engine offers around a 6% increase in peak power and will see a change in capacity, with further technical information available in the near future.

The introduction of the new race engine will also have implications for the chassis manufacturers. The changes will require them to develop completely new chassis for 2027, particularly with regards to how the air intake is positioned and also the engine mounting points.

Work with chassis manufacturers has been ongoing for the last 12 months, with Triumph providing the information they need. The new race engine will be available to Moto2™ teams soon, with private testing ongoing ahead of its on-track debut later this year.
