Trey Nyoni Emerging as Liverpool’s No. 6 Under Andoni Iraola

Liverpool spent the summer with a familiar argument hanging over them, the lack of a specialist No. 6. The market came and went, the noise grew louder, and yet the answer may already have been inside the building. Trey Nyoni, still only 19, is beginning to look like a serious option in that role under Andoni Iraola.

That matters because minutes have followed the talk. Nyoni came on for the final 20 minutes in Liverpool’s win over Bournemouth and helped close the game out cleanly. Before that, he produced an eye-catching display in the Carabao Cup against Tottenham, where his understanding with Alexis Mac Allister stood out. Two different game states, two useful tests, and he handled both.

Nyoni role becoming clear

This is the key point. Nyoni does not fit the old stereotype of a defensive midfielder. He is not a pure ball-winner in the Fabinho mould, and Liverpool do not necessarily need that exact profile now. Iraola’s team want the ball moved quickly, want pressure applied high, and want midfielders who can think forward and react sharply without possession. Nyoni fits that brief.

He explained it plainly: “I’d say [Iraola’s system suits him] because it’s just forward-thinking,” he said. “As soon as you get the ball, it’s just play forward. I think even the press as well is aggressive. He’s big on the press and I think the best way to attack is starting with the press, which is important. Everything out of possession is important, so yeah, I’d say this suits me.”

Andoni Iraola system suits Liverpool youngster

There is no great mystery here. Managers show players what they think of them by where they use them. Nyoni has taken the hint. “At the minute I’ve been playing as a six, so I assume that’s the role that he probably sees me playing the most,” he said.

He added: “I’m still willing to learn to play as the eight or wherever, but right now I’d probably say primarily a six.”

That is clear enough. Iraola sees him as a defensive midfielder, even if the job description is more modern than old-fashioned.

Liverpool midfield options shifting

Supporters wanted a new signing there, and that reaction was understandable. Specialist holding midfielders are expensive, scarce and important. Liverpool, however, may be trying to develop one rather than buy one. Nyoni looks composed on the ball, diligent without it, and comfortable in a system that demands intensity.

There is still a gap between a promising sample and owning the position over a full season. That part comes later. For now, Liverpool have a young midfielder earning trust, understanding his role, and showing why Iraola keeps turning to him. Sometimes the solution is not glamorous. It is simply the player already in front of you.
