Trade prediction links Joey Porter Jr to NFC power

The Pittsburgh Steelers could face a difficult decision regarding Joey Porter Jr. as contract negotiations continue to stall, and one NFL analyst has proposed a blockbuster solution.

Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox has predicted that the Detroit Lions could acquire Porter in exchange for a 2027 first-round pick, a move that would give Pittsburgh another premium asset while potentially resolving the uncertainty surrounding the young cornerback’s future.

The prediction comes as Porter enters the final year of his rookie contract without a long-term extension. The situation has become increasingly complicated in recent weeks, with reports indicating that the two sides remain at an impasse. Porter has also reportedly considered requesting a trade or sitting out games if an agreement cannot be reached.

Knox believes Pittsburgh could ultimately view a trade as a legitimate option if the organization determines that keeping Porter long term is unlikely.

“If things get to a point where the Steelers don’t believe they can keep Porter, flipping them for a high 2027 pick will become an option for them.”

The potential return would be significant. Rather than allowing Porter to play out the final season of his rookie contract and potentially depart in free agency, Pittsburgh would acquire another first-round selection to add to its draft capital.

Knox also connected the hypothetical trade to the Steelers’ long-term quarterback situation.

“Aaron Rodgers isn’t the future at quarterback, and while Pittsburgh may hope that either Will Howard or Drew Allar can be, it wouldn’t hurt to have a pair of first round picks in what is expected to be a QB-heavy draft,” Knox writes.

That could make a 2027 first-round pick particularly valuable for Pittsburgh. Rodgers is entering the season as the Steelers’ veteran option at quarterback, while Howard and Allar represent potential succession plans. If neither young quarterback establishes himself as the long-term answer, an additional first-round selection could give general manager Omar Khan more flexibility to move up the board for a quarterback.

For Detroit, meanwhile, Porter would represent an aggressive addition to a secondary on a team with Super Bowl aspirations. A talented, physical corner entering his prime would give the Lions another proven defensive playmaker and potentially strengthen one of the most important positions on the roster.

Porter has established himself as a significant piece of Pittsburgh’s defense since being selected No. 32 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. He has started all 41 games he has played and recorded 165 tackles, 31 passes defended and three interceptions over his first three seasons.

The timing, however, is critical. Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy has acknowledged an “impasse” in the negotiations, while Porter recently returned to practice after missing time with a back injury.

A trade involving Porter would still represent a major departure for Pittsburgh. The Steelers have little incentive to move a 26-year-old starting cornerback entering his prime, particularly with the team attempting to contend in 2026.

But if the contract stalemate becomes irreparable, a first-round pick could change the equation.

For now, the Lions acquiring Porter remains only a bold prediction—not a reported trade negotiation. But with Pittsburgh’s quarterback future still uncertain and Porter’s contract situation unresolved, Knox’s proposal gives the Steelers an intriguing alternative if the two sides cannot find common ground.
