Alabama Crimson Tide at Kentucky Wildcats Opening Odds: Cover or Not?

Alabama has cleared their first hurdle for 2026 and now move on to the first SEC match-up of the season. Kentucky is not the greatest of teams but they are a step up from East Carolina. In addition, the game is on the road. Perhaps due to these factors, FanDuel has opening odds of Alabama being a 10.5 point favorite with an Over/Under of 48.5. Without being too much of a Gump, that spread looks awfully low. I think I’d jump on that one.

The Wildcats jumped all over FCS Youngstown State, scoring touchdowns on five of their first six drives and cruising to a 45-13 victory. QB Kenny Minchey played the entire game and went 18 of 27 passing for 301 yards, four TDs and no turnovers. It was an impressive performance, no doubt. However, the Crimson Tide defense might just be a tad more daunting opponent this weekend than the Penguins were on Saturday.

UK easily covered the -21.5 spread against YSU, but went under the crazy-high 61.5 O/U points total (I wish I had seen that one). In the preseason, FanDuel had the ‘Cats pegged at 4.5 wins on the season. They looked pretty smooth on Saturday.

The final spread before kickoff on Alabama-East Carolina was Bama -27.5 with an Over/Under of 52.5. With the Crimson Tide’s 48-10 victory over the Pirates, they covered the spread and went Over on the points total.

The Alabama defense was pretty dominating and QB Keelon Russell had some sparks of brilliance. He still needs to learn a few fundamentals like sliding and how to throw the ball away, etc. But when he starts to figure things out, watch out. Lexington will be another step in his progression.

With an over/under of 48.5 and 10.5 point spread, the final score could look something like Bama 30-19 or 29-19. Does this match-up look like a two score game? The highly-unscientific custom is to give the home team three points and then compare from there. But then again, might Las Vegas be baiting overconfident Kentucky fans? For the casual college football bettor, they may look at the final Alabama score and think ECU put up a little bit of a fight. But if not for a busted coverage and a mishandled exchange between Russell and Ryan Williams, this game might have (should have) been much worse.

I like Alabama over the -10.5. The Over/Under seems about spot on, but if pressed I would say Over. Thoughts?
