Top 15 Best Jack Sparrow Quotes From Every Pirates of the Caribbean Movie

Few live-action Disney characters are more iconic than Captain Jack Sparrow in The Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Introduced in 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Johnny Depp’s eccentric pirate captain quickly became a major legend, always entertaining even in the franchise’s weakest entries. Likewise, much of his appeal comes from some of the very best lines of dialogue.

Naturally, Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow delivers some of the most memorable quotes in the entire Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Across five movies (with more reportedly on the way), Jack Sparrow has delivered plenty of hilarious one-liners as well as some genuinely profound pearls here and there.

From The Curse of the Black Pearl to Dead Men Tell No Tales, here are 15 of the very best Jack Sparrow quotes across all five Pirates of the Caribbean films.

“This is the day you will always remember as the day you almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow.”

Jack Sparrow is nothing if not confident, even when he has not yet fully improvised his way out of being surrounded by enemies. First heard in 2003’s Curse of the Black Pearl, Jack’s proclamation about how his foes will always remember the day when they almost caught him is repeated more than once in the franchise, though nothing quite beats its use in the first movie.

“I’m dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest.”

“Me, I’m dishonest. And a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly. It’s the honest ones you want to watch out for. Because you can never predict when they’re going to do something incredibly… stupid.”

“Me, I’m dishonest. And a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly. It’s the honest ones you want to watch out for. Because you can never predict when they’re going to do something incredibly… stupid.”

Jack’s explanation is more than a bit ridiculous, while still having a nugget of truth behind his reasoning. At the same time, the quote is also a nice cover, allowing him to signal to Will Turner while he has the attention of Barbossa and his men.

“If you were waiting for the opportune moment, that was it.”

At the end of The Curse of the Black Pearl, Jack delivers this crucial advice/condemnation to Will Turner following the battle with Captain Barbossa’s crew. With Will having waited his entire life to express his true feelings to Elizabeth Swann, Jack points out that Will once again just missed a golden moment to act on what he wants. Thankfully, Will finally seizes his chance back at Port Royal after saving Jack from his hanging (with Elizabeth’s help).

“Not all treasure is silver and gold, mate.”

Primarily, Jack Sparrow spends much of the franchise pursuing treasure in the form of his ship and the freedom it brings, and the above quote hammers that idea home as he speaks to Will in Curse of the Black Pearl (with Will’s treasure, of course, being Elizabeth). Without a doubt, it’s easily one of Jack’s more sincere and profound lines in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

“Now bring me that horizon.”

Ultimately, the original Pirates of the Caribbean movie ends with Jack reclaiming the Black Pearl and preparing to sail toward another adventure. Standing aboard his beloved ship, he gives the crew their orders before delivering this iconic declaration and humming the classic “Pirate’s Life” song he learned from Elizabeth. All in all, it perfectly captures what Jack Sparrow wants most: freedom to go and sail wherever he wishes.

“Why is the rum always gone?”

Following up from the first movie, when Elizabeth burned all the stores of rum to create a signal fire, Jack Sparrow’s love of rum and personal curse will always be that there’s rarely ever any rum around for him to actually enjoy. As we see in 2006’s Dead Man’s Chest and beyond, the above line is easily one of Jack’s most memorable and quotable.

“I love those moments. I like to wave at them as they pass by.”

Joining Jack’s crew in her search for Will Turner in Dead Man’s Chest, Elizabeth challenges Jack by telling him that at some point he’ll be given the chance to do the right thing, prompting the humorous line above from Jack. Clearly, Jack has never seen himself as an altogether good person, though he does have those moments where he does indeed do the right thing (despite his words to the contrary).

“I’ve got a jar of dirt!”

One of Jack’s most ridiculous and memorable quotes comes from his belief that he possesses the heart of Davy Jones within the jar of dirt given to him by Tia Dalma. Bragging and taunting Jones from his ship, Jack assumes that he has negotiating power, though he doesn’t yet realize that the heart was taken from the jar by James Norrington. Combined with Jack’s epic fall mid-taunt and Jones almost immediately opening fire, the entire scene is easily one of the funniest moments in Dead Man’s Chest.

“Did no one come to save me just because they missed me?”

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/jack-sparrow-chases-crabs-in-potc-3.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />

After being trapped in Davy Jones’ Locker after Elizabeth forced him to sacrifice himself to the Kraken, Jack finally reunites with his former crew and allies, and yet immediately questions their motives in the first act of 2007’s At World’s End. Hilariously, Jack chooses to stand with the few crew members who genuinely wanted him back, as opposed to Barbossa, who needed him to free Calypso, Will, who needed the Black Pearl to free his father, and Elizabeth, who felt guilty.

“The world’s still the same. There’s just…less in it.”

This quote is one of Jack’s more thoughtful and poignant observations from At World’s End. During a conversation with Barbossa about the rapidly changing world, Jack responds to the idea that the world used to be bigger by suggesting that it hasn’t actually changed at all. Instead, there’s simply less left to explore, a rather bleak statement reflecting the apparent shrinking freedom that comes from a pirate’s life as organizations like the East India Trading Company seek to control the seven seas.
