Sandro Tonali believes the time is right to pursue a new adventure as Tottenham close in on a £100m deal to sign him.
Tonali is set to become the most expensive Italian footballer of all time and will be Spurs’ club-record signing, should his switch from Newcastle United be completed.
Since joining Newcastle from Serie A giants AC Milan in 2023, Tonali has gone on to make 110 appearances in all competitions, scoring 10 goals and providing nine assists.
During his time at St. James’ Park, the 26-year-old helped Newcastle end their 70-year wait for a domestic trophy by beating Liverpool 2-1 in the EFL Cup final in 2024-25.
However, the Italy international looks set to depart Newcastle and join Spurs, who have made a busy start to the transfer window with Tonali set to become their sixth signing.
Tonali was spotted at Milan airport on Thursday as he headed to North London to put pen to paper on a reported six-year deal with Roberto De Zerbi’s side.
“We’ve decided to change, we’re ready for this new adventure,” Tonali told reporters.
“It was a bit long, we had a sort of agreement with Newcastle, we talked about it every day and then got it done.
“They wanted the best for me, we wanted to get the best deal for them. We parted on great terms, we’re all happy, and I’m ready for this new adventure.”
Tonali was also reportedly of interest to Spurs’ rivals Arsenal, but the midfielder explained that a conversation with De Zerbi was part of the reason behind his decision.
“Let’s say that Roberto De Zerbi did a great job, he had a big impact on all this,” Tonali added.
“It is a life choice for my family, because we come from three years in Newcastle, and our lives changed with our child’s birth. So we decided to change a bit.
“De Zerbi made a great difference. He did his job, and he did it very well.”
Tonali will join Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, Martin Dubravka, Jan Paul van Hecke and Mateus Fernandes as Spurs’ summer arrivals, as they look to rebuild under De Zerbi.
Spurs previously had a bid of around £80m rejected by Newcastle, but they are now set to pay an initial £92.5m plus a further £7.5m in add-ons.
He will quickly usurp Fernandes as the club’s most expensive player ever, after he joined from West Ham for £85m.
He will become Spurs’ most expensive transfer in their history, just after they had smashed their club-record transfer fee to sign Fernandes for £85m from relegated West Ham.
