Toms River BMX legend adds to legacy in new X Games League

Toms River native and BMX legend Garrett Reynolds has been adding to his legacy in the innagural MoonPay X Games this summer with more gold to create distance from other greats in the respective sport.

Two weeks ago Reynolds won his 19th career gold medal in the Monster Energy BMX Street event. The championship in New Orleans was the final event of the league’s season. Reynolds holds the most gold medals, having four more than Nyjah Huston and Shaun White. Reynolds has captured 27 medals overall, which is second all-time. At 35, Reynolds is the oldest rider in the competition but hasn’t slowed down.

Though Reynolds’ São Paulo team finished last in the leaderboards in New Orleans, there was still plenty to celebrate.

“I was just thinking not to go too hard off the beginning and was hoping to land a run,” said Reynolds after Day One. “A lot of mental toughness. I loved hearing the Superdome crowd. I wasn’t expecting that for the first event for them to be so lively and engaged with what we were doing, but I think Broc (Raiford) coming in as the hometown boy set the tone for them to get involved. It feels crazy to have consecutive wins. When I got drafted to the team, I put a little bit more effort into just trying to get my body right and work on landing hard tricks more often and it feels really good that I’ve had a goal and I kind of went out and did it. I live day by day, so this is really good for today, but tomorrow, I have to start doing other things, you know?”

Brady Baker, who’s also from Toms River, was 10th overall in the league in overall points for Team Los Angelas. Reynolds is 12th in points.

Both riders were drafted by teams in the new X Games League (XGL) sponsored by crypto vendor MoonPay in March. Both riders attended Toms River North High School.
