Tinubu Seeks Senate Approval for Bill to Strengthen Senior Secondary Education

President Bola Tinubu has transmitted the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026 to the Senate, seeking its expedited passage as part of efforts to strengthen the administration and governance of public senior secondary education across Nigeria.

The President’s request was contained in a letter read during Thursday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

According to Tinubu, the proposed amendment bill was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at its meeting on April 30, 2026, before being vetted and finalised by the Federal Ministry of Justice in line with constitutional and legislative drafting standards.

He explained that the legislation is designed to strengthen the legal framework and operational capacity of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), improve the governance of public senior secondary schools, and enhance learning outcomes nationwide.

“The purpose of the bill is to strengthen the administration and governance of public senior secondary education in Nigeria,” the President stated in the letter.

Tinubu noted that the amendment aligns with his administration’s commitment to building stronger educational institutions in support of national development and appealed to lawmakers to grant the bill accelerated consideration.

Following the presentation, Senate President Akpabio referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for legislative processing and directed the committee to report back to the chamber within one week.

The National Senior Secondary Education Commission was established to coordinate the development of public senior secondary education, improve standards, and support states through policy coordination, funding interventions, and quality assurance. If passed and assented to, the amendment is expected to further strengthen the commission’s mandate and improve the delivery of senior secondary education across the country.
