Timothy Olyphant & Brad Pitt’s New Hollywood Thriller Blocked From 2 Major Theatrical Releases

Timothy Olyphant and Brad Pitt’s The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth just hit a slight snag.

The upcoming thriller serves as a spinoff sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood…, with Pitt reprising the titular stuntman character role, only now working as a studio fixer in the seedy underbelly of Hollywood eight years after the Oscar-winning original. While Tarantino penned the script for the film, David Fincher is carrying the torch as director of The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, with it slated for an IMAX-exclusive theatrical release on November 25.

Now, with less than a month left until the film hits the big screen, IndieWire has brought word that The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth is reportedly being blocked from part of its major theatrical run. Olyphant and Pitt’s thriller sequel is set to be the first Netflix title to be exclusively released in IMAX before streaming, but will not be doing so at Regal or Cinemark, as both chains have declined to play the film. This effectively removes approximately 120 screens from the film’s theatrical run, leaving only AMC as the chain to carry it in IMAX.

Netflix’s decision to give The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth an IMAX-exclusive premiere in the first place came as something of a surprise for many, given the company has notoriously been stringent on giving its original films too long of a big-screen release window, typically doing so for award-hopeful titles. However, they have gradually been pushing their way into the theatrical sector, with everything from the Stranger Things series finale to a sing-along re-release of KPop Demon Hunters.

Cliff Booth is meant to be part of that further push with their big-budget projects, with Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, in particular, slated for its widest theatrical release yet of 45 days in theaters. Interestingly, the fantasy reboot was previously slated for a November 26 IMAX date of 1,000 screens that Olyphant and Pitt’s spinoff sequel took over. However, without Cinemark or Regal, that now brings its reported screen total down to approximately 550, roughly a 50% cut from its original plans.

The above report also clarifies that part of the reason for Cinemark and Regal having the ability to block The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth‘s IMAX release on their screens is because the premium format company “came aboard as a partner late,” thus eschewing their normal policy of dictating what plays on what screens. Without the Hollywood-skewing thriller, this now lets both chains utilize more of their screens for the similarly anticipated Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

Rearrange the movies into the correct US release order.

What will now be interesting to watch is how this decrease in IMAX availability ultimately impacts The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth‘s box office performance. The film reportedly comes with a hefty price tag of $200 million, something even major blockbuster projects have shown struggles to recoup in recent years, but given Netflix’s revenue is much more driven by their streaming figures than theatrical, a solid couple of weeks on the big screen could still give Olyphant and Pitt’s thriller a strong start going into its December 23 streaming premiere.
