There seems to be a real feeling that the Detroit Tigers are going to move on from Tarik Skubal, and unless he’s willing to take an extension before the trade deadline, it seems to be the right decision.
It’s unfortunate that things have unfolded the way they have in Detroit, but it’s just part of the game. Skubal went down with an injury, and the Tigers have arguably been the worst team in Major League Baseball since.
However, Skubal doesn’t really seem like a guy who wants to be traded. In fact, he has made many comments suggesting he enjoys his time in Detroit. That might not mean everything when it comes to a contract being handed out, but it’s at least a promising sign that if the Tigers are in the ballpark of where they need to be with a deal this offseason, perhaps he stays around.
Regarding the trade stuff at the moment, he had a lot to say about it, and it didn’t sound like a guy who’s going to be traded in the next two months.
“With all the trade stuff, we just got to start winning games,” Skubal said, via The Detroit Free Press. “Last year, there was not one word about me being traded. Winning calms all that stuff down, and that’s what this team needs to do.”
“We’ve been counted out before,” Skubal said. “Rightfully so, we were counted out, and rightfully so, we’re counted out right now. It’s the back-against-the-wall type of thing. We’ll see who we really are and how we fight. I’ve seen it before, and that gives me a ton of confidence in this group.”
There’s always a possibility that everybody knows what’s going on behind the scenes in terms of Skubal and the Tigers.
However, I don’t think there’s been any real decision made just yet. The Tigers are probably entertaining some of these talks, while Skubal probably understands them but is willing to stay in Detroit if the team can start playing a bit better over the next few weeks.
