Tigers' A.J. Hinch reportedly has 'no interest' in open Astros GM job

Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch may be wanted by another big league club, though the desire might not be mutual

Per a report by USA TODAY Sports’ Bob Nightengale, Hinch has “no interest” in filling the open general manager position with the Houston Astros, the team for which Hinch served as manager from 2015-19. According to Nightengale, Hinch is “beloved” by the Astros and still maintains a relationship with owner Jim Crane.

The Astros and former GM Dana Brown mutually agreed to separate on Aug. 24, ending Brown’s four-year tenure atop the club. A group of assistant GMs (including former Astros star Jeff Bagwell) have taken over GM duties in the interim.

Houston was Hinch’s second stop as a major league manager after spending parts of two seasons leading the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2009-10. The Astros hired Hinch in 2015, and two years later Hinch led Houston to its first World Series title with a seven-game win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

After the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal broke in January 2020, Houston fired Hinch and MLB suspended him for one season. The Tigers hired Hinch ahead of the 2021 season after Hinch finished serving his suspension, and Hinch has been Detroit’s manager ever since.

Tigers hoping to get OF back Tuesday

The news of Houston’s interest in Hinch is somewhat of a surprise, as Hinch hasn’t recently been connected with any MLB job outside of Detroit. Hinch also received a contract extension from the Tigers during the 2025 season, one in which the Tigers marked their second-straight playoff appearance, though the club didn’t share the details of the extension.

“I’m so happy being in Detroit,” Hinch said during an end-of-season conference in October when the news of his extension broke. “I’m so proud to be the manager here. I love working for [Tigers president of baseball operations] Scott [Harris]. It’s the second time that I was approached and asked for more, and it’s an immediate yes for me.”

Hinch has a 1,027-940 career record as a manger over 13 seasons, including a 457-488 record with Detroit, where he has marked the longest stint of his managerial career.
