Ryan Murphy is at it again with horror, but this time, he’s introducing us to a teen thriller. FX’s upcoming series, The Shards, features a few recognizable faces in the cast and follows a group of privileged high school students in the early 1980s as they navigate their identities, sex, jealousy, obsession and the dangers around them.

What Is The Shards About?
The Shards is set in 1981 Los Angeles, California, where a 17-year-old version of Bret Easton Ellis attends the elite, privileged Buckley prep school as a senior. The character’s world is turned upside down after new student Robert Mallory arrives, and his mysterious presence coincides with a serial killer in town known as “The Trawler.”
The show is based on Ellis’ semi-autobiographical book of the same name.
The book’s Penguin Random House description reads, “17-year-old Bret is a senior at the exclusive Buckley prep school when a new student arrives with a mysterious past. Robert Mallory is bright, handsome, charismatic and shielding a secret from Bret and his friends even as he becomes a part of their tightly knit circle. Bret’s obsession with Mallory is equaled only by his increasingly unsettling preoccupation with the Trawler, a serial killer on the loose who seems to be drawing ever closer to Bret and his friends, taunting them — and Bret in particular — with grotesque threats and horrific, sharply local acts of violence.”
“The coincidences are uncanny, but they are also filtered through the imagination of a teenager whose gifts for constructing narrative from the filaments of his own life are about to make him one of the most explosive literary sensations of his generation,” the rest of the description reads.
Who Is in The Shards FX Show Cast?
The FX series features Igby Rigney as Bret Easton Ellis, Homer Gere as Robert Mallory, Graham Campbell as Thom Wright, Hayes Warner as Debbie Shaffer, Wes Bentley as Terry Schaffer and Kaia Gerber as Susan Reynolds.
Supporting actors, including Owen Painter, who plays recurring character Matt Kellner, exclusively spoke with Hollywood Life at the series’ New York City red carpet premiere about how the show follows Ellis’ novel.
“With the book, we did our best to match the quality of that writing,” the Wednesday star said, adding that it was “so deeply researched.”
Daniel Dale, who portrays Ryan Vaughn in the show, explained how the show will connect with viewers who actually went to high school in the ’80s.
“It’s pretty faithful to that time period, and the people that were on set that did grow up in LA in that time period [were around],” he said.
