The BMW PGA Championship is in full swing, with many of the world’s best players teeing off at Wentworth.

Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm are among the players competing in England this week on the DP World Tour, as the PGA Tour and LIV Golf seasons are over. But there is a notable absence.

Scottie Scheffler isn’t playing in Europe this week. That’s understandable, as he has next week’s Presidents Cup to prepare for, and can hardly afford to jet across the Atlantic for a tournament.

However, this has raised a larger concern about Scheffler. Unlike many of the greats before him, he very rarely plays outside of the United States. Many fans think he’s failing to help the global game by hardly competing abroad.

It would be great for the game if Scheffler did decide to play internationally more often, and he spoke about whether he plans to do this more in the future at this year’s Scottish Open.

Scheffler has played outside of the US twice this season. The Scottish Open was his first international appearance as he prepared for the following week’s Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, and in Scotland he spoke about whether he plans to play abroad more often.

The world number one said, “It definitely interests me. I’d like to see how it shapes out the next couple of years. There’s a lot of places I think I’d like to play.

“There’s always just, you know, the time and the place for me. I’m at a time in my life where I have a young family at home and young kids.

“Those are times — the fall is a special time for our family. It’s where we can really check out and be together, and I get to spend a lot of time with my kids. So I hold those moments pretty sacred.

“But at the same time, I love golf, and I would love to be able to play more internationally. Like Australia; New Zealand is a place we would love to be able to go to. My wife has always wanted to go to New Zealand.

But like I said, I love this style of golf, and I feel like it’s pretty unique to here. But going to play the Sandbelt in Australia would be pretty special as well. Hopefully I can find the time. It’s definitely an intriguing part of the schedule, and yeah, it definitely interests me as well.”

Maybe in the future, when the time is right for Scheffler, we’ll see him playing internationally more often. But for now, these events outside the States are missing a significant presence.
