The Papers: 'Justice' and 'Predatory' Brand faces jail

· · 2 min read

Many of the front pages feature UK entertainer Russell Brand after he was convicted of rape and sexual assault. “Justice” is the Daily Mirror’s single-word headline printed over a photo of Brand, writing that the court found him “guilty of raping one woman and assaulting three others”.

“Brand faces jail for sex crimes”, says the Daily Express, relaying the court’s finding that he was “using fame to offend”.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the BBC has been accused of “enabling” Brand’s behaviour, writing that “his conviction has piled fresh pressure” on the public broadcaster – along with other networks Brand worked for including Channel 4 and MTV – “over its failure to control its stars”. A BBC spokesperson said there could be “no place for the abuse of power”, adding: “Across the industry we must work together to ensure that anyone who suffers at someone else’s hand feels able to report it, that their concerns are taken seriously and that they are listened to.”

“Rapist Brand: More victims” says the Daily Star, as “he faces rape claims by two more women”.

The Guardian says “Brand faces ‘significant prison term for rape and sexual assault”, as the 51-year-old is remanded in custody.

“Brand found guilty of rape” is the headline in the Times.

“Downfall of the swaggering sex predator fawned over by the Left” is the Daily Mail’s take on Brand’s conviction.

“Rapist” is the Sun’s single-word headline, with “Predator in cell as 2 more charges loom”.

“Rapist Brand caged” declares the Metro, adding: “Judge refuses plea to spend the weekend at home”.

“‘Predatory’ Brand faces jail for rape and sexual assaults,” the Independent says, going on to write: “Comedian behind bars as he is convicted of one rape and three sexual assaults and denied bail.”

The i Paper carries a warning from Nobel Prize-winning scientist Geoffrey Hinton, widely seen as the godfather of artificial intelligence, who says AI is “all hurtling out of control”. The tech expert tells the paper: “We’re going to have to share the planet with something smarter than us. They’re going to take over.” He also says it is “very dangerous” to allow tech bosses Sam Altman, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg to “be responsible for the safety of this frontier technology”, the paper reports.

“Tech stocks plunge as investors worry blue wave will sink AI spending boom,” says the Financial Times. The tech-centred Nasdaq market was “down as much as 6.4 per cent”, the paper reports, “amid fears Democrats’ sweeping victories in mid-term races across the US would herald a slowdown in the AI boom”.
