The Pants Predicts: Iowa Hawkeyes vs Northern Illinois

We are finally just one short day away from the triumphant return of Hawkeye football as Iowa is set to host Northern Illinois at 3:15pm CT on Saturday. With the return of the Hawkeyes comes the return of our weekly staff predictions!

FanDuel Sportsbook has Iowa favored by 31.5 points (yes, really) and opened with an over/under at 46.5 total points. As the week has progressed, the point total has dipped a bit but the line has remained pretty steady, despite the folks in Piscataway finding a way to lose as 29.5-point favorites over UMass on Thursday night.

That gives us implied final score of Iowa 38, NIU 6.5.

Here at The Pants, we’re a bit less optimistic about the Iowa defense, but somehow more optimistic about the offense – even without a starting QB. Our consensus final score prediction is 39.8-12.7. Call it 40-13. That puts us comfortably on the side of taking NIU with the points and inexplicably WAY on the over.

WHAT IS HAPPENING?!?!

Anyway, here’s a look at each of our staff’s individual predictions.

Boy is it good to be back into a game week!

Now, I have to admit the rumors swirling over he last handful of days on the QB situation have me second-guessing my initial thoughts on this one, but I don’t think it impacts the outcome at all. This Huskies team may well be better than the one that was brutal a year ago, but I don’t think they’re going to put up a legitimate fight in Kinnick on Saturday.

I fully expect Lester to establish the run early and often with both Moulton and Phillips topping 80 yards and finding paydirt. My inclination is still that we end up seeing Hank Brown either start or get more snaps than we expect and look better than he did on Kids Day. Good enough to keep the competition going into hate week.

The defense is our big concern (what a laughable thing to write lmao) but they won’t be tested in the opener. Lutmer will look incredible and the defensive line will look good enough here to have us wondering if NIU was that bad or if our concerns were overblown.

Hawks by a lot, but 31.5 is a big number. Always bet the under.

Iowa 34, NIU 9

NIU enters Kinnick with a new interim head coach, Rob Harley, who was previously their defensive coordinator. He has had a tall task to rebuild a depleted defensive roster beginning with the front seven and needing to replace nearly all their top tacklers from last season. While that does bode well for the prospects of a deep running back room to keep the chains moving, I do not expect Tim Lester to stick with ground and pound any longer than he must. First and foremost, Lester needs to settle the QB tie breaker sooner than later.

Speaking of needing to find a tie breaker at QB, coach Rob Harley was not to be outdone by Ferentz, and their depth chart this week had a three way “OR” designation at QB. Some games go down into history as the battle of the What Ifs. This one will be the battle of the ORs.

Special teams is a huge concern for me for 2026, although I’ll say I am looking forward to watching Zach Lutmer return punts and Brevin Doll return kickoffs. Last year versus Minnesota, Lutmer returned an interception for a pick six, extending Iowa’s streak of recording at least one pick six for the 18th consecutive season.

Iowa 41, NIU 10

This is about as close to an NFL preseason game as you’ll get, which is exactly what this Iowa needs. NIU enters Kinnick with a brand new head coach in Rob Harley and, as HWKTACO pointed out a quarterback dilemma of their own. Incoming FCS transfer Taron Dickens brings eye popping stats from Western Carolina, but he only joined the team two months ago, while returning starters Jalen Macon and Brady Davidson have familiarity with the system, but nothing close to Dickens’ production. It’s very possible we might see four (or more) quarterbacks take the field Saturday depending on how things go.

Facing an unsettled offense is just the thing Iowa’s defense needs to get that all-important game experience. The Husky defense, meanwhile, returns absolutely zero starters from last year which should make Tim Lester very excited no matter who is taking the snaps. With Iowa’s O-line and running backs, I expect a big game on the ground which should give the quarterback’s the breathing room to figure things out.

Like many Iowa season openers, I think it’ll take a little time to get things going, but by the second quarter I think the Hawks will have firmly taken command and started to run away with this one.

Iowa 40, NIU 10

As my esteemed colleagues have noted – this is not an NIU team that is likely to present a serious challenge to the Hawkeyes…. BUT!

Last season Huskies running back Telly Johnson Jr. racked up 712 yards on 5.7 yards per carry and the Huskies finished 29th in FBS in rushing yards per game. On the flip side, the Huskies team didn’t face a ranked or P4 opponent last season and against that opposition, 2025 NIU averaged an Iowa-esque 98 yards per game through the air, something they will hope to improve on with the addition to their roster of Western Carolina transfer Taron “Tyger” Dickens, who passed for an incredible 3,508 yards with 28 TDs and only 2 interceptions in only 9 games last season at the FCS level. If that type of production can translate, paired with a respectable run game, it could give the Hawkeyes some trouble when the Huskies have the ball.

This concern becomes especially prevalent given that the Hawkeyes return zero starters and only 1 player with meaningful big ten experience on its defensive line. That said, in Phil we trust, and I expect that the gulf in talent between a Big Ten roster and that of a mid major school should make it so that the Hawkeyes can contain the Husky offense even if the Huskies manage to move it between the 20s.

On the other side of the ball, I think we all expect the offense to take another step forward under the proven leadership of offensive coordinator Tim Lester. The offensive line, while weathering attrition, has been well regarded by both the coaching staff and media, and should be able to push the NIU front around. Given that the Hawkeyes return Kamari Moulton and add, media-described, bowling ball style runner L.J. Phillips Jr., running the ball shouldn’t be a problem Saturday. Further, if the receiving core is as good as advertised, there’s no reason the Hawkeyes can’t move the ball through the air when needed as well, regardless of which Hawkeye quarterback is then running the offense.

At the end of the day this will likely be a tune-up game where the main intrigue is the much-discussed Heck vs. Hank QB battle, but I would not be shocked to see NIU put up a few scores early and get some fans twitching anxiously in their seats in the first half. That said, I think the talent gap is ultimately too wide for the Huskies and the Hawkeyes wear them down in the second half.

Iowa 45, NIU 24

NIU was 3-9 last year and new (interim) HC Rob Harley is returning only a handful of starters, but maybe that’s a good thing (I refer you to that 3-9 record). He’s bringing the FCS’ leading passer from a year ago (who is definitely going to get the bulk of the snaps on Saturday), a pretty solid RB, and not much else. As this is an Iowa blog I would be remiss if I did not mention that their punter is pretty good, and if all goes according to plan, he’ll have plenty of opportunities on Saturday.

We’ll get a heavy dose of both Brown and Hecklinski and, hopefully, a whole lot of completed passes to Reese Vanderzee, Evan James, Tony Diaz, and DJ Vonnahme. We’re going to see plenty of Kamari Moulton and LJ Phillips (not to mention Nathan McNeill and Xavier Williams) running behind an Oline that some in the media think will be a top contender for the Joe Moore Award. For the first time in a while (QB decision aside), I’m not really that concerned about the offense.

We all know that Phil Parker is a wizard and that this defensive unit will be fine, but right now, the biggest questions are on his side of the ball. Will the new look DL be able to stop the run? Will Iose Epenesa, Drew Campbell, or Kamari Brown be able to get to the QB from the edge? Will Cam Buffington be able to handle the responsibility of a Mike Linbacker? Will the new faces in the backfield be able to get up to speed quickly? Lots of questions that I’m not sure can be fully answered against this opponent.

Will Iowa win this game? Almost certainly. Will winning this game give us the answers to head into El Assico with the kind of confidence that we, as fans, want? Almost certainly not.

Iowa 34, NIU 10

Northern Illinois is not good. On its power rankings, CBS has NIU ranked No. 127 of 138 teams. If Iowa wants, it should be able to pull a Cignetti and name the score. Historically, Ferentz doesn’t do that, but this is a situation where Iowa needs to give both its starting quarterbacks a full and fair opportunity to prove themselves, so while Zach Lutmer and Kade Pieper and other established starters should and will see limited minutes, a lot of the less established starters, including the quarterbacks, will stay on the field longer than they typically would. Iowa has the game in hand by the end of the first quarter and Ferentz/Lester opt to air it out more than what would normally be expected. The defense pitches a shutout in the first half, but the starters mostly sit in the second half and NIU puts some points on the board. 

Iowa 45, NIU 13

So there you have it – the offense has its way in the opener, but all the turnover on Iowa’s defense means there are some growing pains, ushering in a new era of taking the over! Or something like that.
