The Oyo Rescue Blueprint: When Patience, Intelligence and Courage Paid Off

The successful rescue of the 44 pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State has been described by the Nigerian Army as the outcome of weeks of painstaking intelligence gathering, strategic planning and seamless collaboration among security agencies.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Acting Deputy Director, 2 Division Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, the Army said the victims were rescued on July 10 during “intelligence-led, carefully planned and executed operations” led by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Major General CR Nnebeife.

According to the Army, the operation involved personnel from the Office of the National Security Adviser, the National Counter Terrorism Centre, Defence Headquarters, the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the National Intelligence Agency, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, as well as Amotekun operatives, local vigilantes and hunters.

The Army explained that the operation, which lasted for more than a month, focused not only on locating the abducted pupils and teachers but also on dismantling the criminal network behind the kidnapping.

It stated that security forces targeted the terrorists’ kingpins, logistics networks, informants and hideouts within the Old Oyo National Park and other locations.

“As part of the operations, multiple arrests were made within Oyo State and in other locations across some states in the country. These arrests completely disorganized the group, exerted overwhelming pressure on them and ultimately led the terrorist group to unconditionally release the pupils and teachers,” the statement read.

The Army added that the mission was deliberately executed with caution to avoid civilian casualties and ensure the safe rescue of the children and their teachers.

“It suffices to note that the operations were carefully planned and executed to avoid collateral damages and to equally ensure that the innocent children and teachers were safely rescued. However, there were some casualties on the part of the security forces,” it said.

The rescued victims are currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital before being handed over to the Oyo State Government for reunification with their families.

The operation stands out as an example of how patience, intelligence and coordinated action can deliver results in complex hostage situations. Rather than launching a hasty assault that could have endangered the lives of the captives, the security agencies sustained pressure on the kidnappers by dismantling their support network until they were left with little option but to release the victims.

The Army also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for providing the strategic guidance and resources that supported the operation, while thanking Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, the National Security Adviser, service chiefs, heads of security agencies, the media and members of the public for their support throughout the rescue mission.

The Oyo operation demonstrates that effective intelligence gathering, inter-agency cooperation and disciplined execution remain critical tools in the fight against kidnapping and terrorism, offering a blueprint for future security operations across the country.
