‘The league’s a disaster right now’: Mike Francesa calls out WNBA

It’s been a wild summer for the WNBA, between the seemingly endless controversies involving Caitlin Clark and all of the political firestorm that ensued after Sophie Cunningham spoke out against transgender women in women’s sports. While it’s certainly led to a lot of media attention, it isn’t exactly good attention.

Over the past few months, the WNBA has become the most toxic space in all sports as players and the league itself have become political pawns. Now, longtime radio host Mike Francesa is calling out the league’s leadership.

‘The league’s a disaster’

During his podcast this week, Mike Francesa was asked his take on the current state of the WNBA, and he was certainly not shy about blaming the WNBA’s leadership for not having the foresight to see how things would change once Clark entered the league and the players for not welcoming her.

“They have turned their league into a bubbling, volcanic, political, chaotic situation where every nut is now getting involved politically in the WNBA on all different levels,” Francesa ranted on his podcast. “It’s the worst thing that could have ever happened. I blame the people who run the league, I blame the players who didn’t have the long-range vision and didn’t have the smarts to realize what Caitlin Clark was going to do for their league, and instead, tried to hurt her and run her out of the league at every point.”

Caitlin Clark, Pistol Pete?

Francesa went on to compare Clark to when Pete Maravich joined the Atlanta Hawks.

“There were revolts against Pete Maravich when he came to the NBA,” Francesa recalled. “He broke up a very good Atlanta Hawks team because there was insane jealousy and people felt he hadn’t earned anything and they felt he was just a self-promoting showboat.”

While the issues might have started with Clark, Francesa acknowledges that the issues are far beyond her at this point.

“Caitlin Clark came to that league and energized it in a way that they had never seen possible,” Francesa added.  “They had never been able to sell that league to anybody, and she sold it to everybody. And they’re all trying to ruin it. And now it’s become a political mess way past just the issues with Caitlin Clark. The league’s a disaster right now.”
