Shohei Ohtanijoined the Los Angeles Dodgersin a mega-money deal back in December 2023.

At the time, Ohtani was considered one of the best players in baseball and was a very attractive option for teams after he decided to leave the Los Angeles Angels as a free agent after six years.

As expected, interest in his services was high, and it led the Dodgers to agree to one of the biggest contracts in sporting history, which they will be paying out until 2043.

LA Dodgers will owe Shohei Ohtani $680m after 2033

Ohtani signed a 10-year contract with the Dodgers back in 2023, which currently sees him taking home $2m per year.

That playing contract expires in 2033, and it is at that point that the MLB star will start really earning some huge money.

As shown by Spotrac, beginning in 2034 once his Dodgers contract is up, Ohtani will then earn $68m a year for 10 years in a row.

That is $680m in deferred payments coming his way, adding to the $20m he is due to earn across his actual contract with the LA-based outfit.

In total, it will see the principal owner and chairman of the Dodgers, Mark Walter, allowing the team to pay $700m to the player across the entire deal.

While exact details of some contracts are unclear, it is thought that Ohtani has the second-biggest deal of any athlete in the world.

Juan Soto is thought to have secured a $765m 15-year deal with the New York Mets previously.

Elsewhere, while you could argue soccer has a bigger global reach than baseball, Lionel Messi is understood to have been the highest-paid player in that sport previously when he was under contract at FC Barcelona and took home $674m over four years.
