The Duke Chronicle Profiles The Coaching Staff

The Duke Chronicle, having profiled all the players on this year’s roster, has moved on to the coaches.

Obviously, they look at head coach Jon Scheyer, who has been sensational since taking over for Mike Krzyzewski in 2022. He’s gotten a bit of criticism for not winning a natty, but he’s only coached for four seasons, and is moving into his fifth. It doesn’t always happen right away; indeed, it rarely happens for any coach.

Despite that, he’s been brilliant.

The Chronicle also profiles Chris Carrawell, who heads up the offense. The article points out his role in developing a ridiculous number of NBA forwards.

Then it moves on to Emanuel Dildy, who helped turn Dame Sarr into a rising star, and Tyler Thornton.

We’ve always seen that guy as a future coach, and he works with the point guards. That means he’ll be busy this season, as he has three point guards (Caleb Foster, Cayden Boozer, and Deron Rippey) to work with, along with John Blackwell, who wants to sharpen his point skills, too.

Finally, the article moves on to KJ Conklin, who is the new guy. We haven’t gotten a real feel for his role, but Scheyer has proven to be very smart about who he hires, and we have no doubt Conklin’s role is thoroughly defined.

The most interesting thing to us about this staff is that so far, Scheyer has shown a knack for identifying talented coaches, most recently Jai Lucas and Evan Bradds. Lucas was a known commodity, but Bradds was a bit less so. Both are now head coaches running well-respected programs at Miami and Belmont, respectively.
