Atletico Madrid have not made too many decisive moves in the transfer market yet this summer, with the arrival of Kang-in Lee from PSG at €40m their most significant addition so far.
But things are about to get interesting: they’re deep into the bidding for Tottenham defender Cristian Romero, and are battling to keep hold of one of their top stars.
Julian Alvarez has been the subject of interest from the likes of Arsenal, PSG and Barcelona this summer already, and made a statement pushing to leave.
Diego Simeone rebuffs interest in key attacker
“The club has made a decision, which Miguel Ángel Gil Marin has explained very well,” manager Diego Simeone said when asked about the future of wantaway attacker Alvarez.
“From a sporting perspective, we’re very happy to have a player like Julián, and we’ll help him continue to grow and improve.”
The fact that they’re still keeping the door open for Alvarez, despite his open attempts to leave them, shows how much they value him and how much they’re willing to sacrifice to keep the Argentina star around.
Simeone is not one to cut off his nose to spite his face – he knows he’s got a far better chance of winning things this year with Alvarez than without.
Of course you never know what could happen at the end of the window – a team could swoop in and offer a crazy fee. But in any case, Atletico’s best stance is just to keep insisting that Alvarez is their man, right up until he’s not.
