Rebecca Yarros’ Fourth Wing fantasy series is popular for many reasons, but her enigmatic depiction of the sentient dragons in the novels is one of the biggest. The best fantasy books about dragons don’t paint dragons simply as mindless beasts or terrifying monsters, but as intelligent, complex characters who rival the humans they interact with. Fourth Wing succeeds because the dragons of the Empyrean choose their riders and have deep bonds with each other outside of the human world, making readers desperate to learn more about them.
Human-dragon bonds in books are always tenuous, as any human who attempts to control or work with a dragon is taking a risk. However, these relationships are some of the most aspirational for readers who long to experience a magical adventure on dragonback. While Fourth Wing provides plenty of excellent fuel for these machinations, the 1995 series, Realm of the Elderlings, is a classic fantasy saga that takes the dragon archetype to a whole new level.
Realm Of The Elderlings Has The Best Depiction Of Dragons In Fantasy Novels
Beginning in 1995 with Assassin’s Apprentice, the Realm of the Elderlings series might have begun as a classic fantasy adventure Bildungsroman, but quickly exploded into a 16-book-long epic saga. Written by Robin Hobb, every book in Realm of the Elderlings is set in the same world. However, it travels across decades, countries, and characters, giving the reader one of the most fully developed fictional worlds in the fantasy genre. And, like any good fantasy series, it has dragons.
It’s not until the final book of the Farseer Trilogy, Assassin’s Quest, that the full impact of dragons on the narrative begins to take shape. However, from there, Hobb doesn’t hold back from answering every question readers might have about the lore of the dragons. As the series progresses, every collection introduces new context into the world of the dragons, transforming them into some of the most compelling creatures in the story.
Though dragons are a vital part of the narrative from the first pages of Fourth Wing, they still hold some secrets that audiences haven’t uncovered quite yet. Of course, since the Realm of the Elderlings series is complete, its depiction of dragons paints a fuller picture. However, even in the earlier installments, Realm of the Elderlings provides one of the most unique ways of depicting human-dragon relationships, never going in the direction readers would expect.

There are undoubtedly dragons in Fourth Wing that the riders and characters know intimately. When a rider and dragon have bonded, they share a unique line of communication and relationship that can’t be reproduced. However, this doesn’t mean the riders know everything the dragons have in store, and neither do the readers. The most recent Fourth Wing release is the companion book, Threshing Day. Threshing Day confirmed twists about the dragons’ social and political alignments and beliefs that have only been hinted at in the past.
In Threshing Day, dragons lie about their age and past riders, and hint at planning who they will choose before the day when potential riders and dragons meet. This throws a wrench into much of what the POV characters in Fourth Wing previously believed and must be addressed by Yarros in the coming books.
Not much is known about the internal politics of the dragon world in Fourth Wing, and the Threshing Day reveals make it clear that the dragons have bigger plots and plans than their riders ever thought possible. With the next book in the Fourth Wing series potentially coming in 2027, though the wait could be longer, Yarros has paved the way for some interesting lore-building for the dragons.
