Joe Hornaday publicized Texas Tech football and other sports for three decades, and Tech is honoring the late sports information director before the Red Raiders‘ home game Friday, Sept. 18, against Houston.
A framed photo of Hornaday was set up in the front row of the Galaxy Stadium press box, along with “In Memory of Joe Hornaday” and the usual flip card distributed to media with the team rosters and depth charts. Hornaday died on Sept. 9 at age 79, two weeks after he suffered a fall at his Lubbock home that caused a head injury.
Tech also scheduled a pre-game moment silence in his memory.

Hornaday was a Tech assistant sports information director for two years before being promoted to sports information director from 1980 through 1996. Then he was assistant athletics director for public relations until his retirement in 2008.
The Austin native attended Tech for four years in the late 1960s before being drafted into the U.S. Army. In Frankfurt, Germany, he served as a writer and editor of the 3rd Armored Division’s Spearhead newspaper. He then spent five years at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram before returning to Tech, where he completed a journalism degree in 1979.
A celebration of his life is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, in the north end zone club of Galaxy Stadium.
