Texas A&M star named a finalist for NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award

After a fantastic junior season, star texas-am" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Texas A&M pitcher Clayton Freshcorn was named a finalist for the National College Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award.

Freshcorn was vital to the Aggie bullpen, logging a First Team All-SEC season with his 2.82 ERA over 54.1 innings, leading the team among pitchers with over 15 IP. He also had 12 saves, which ranked sixth in the country, and led the team in walks per 9 innings and in home runs per 9 among pitchers with over 35 IP.

His importance to the team was on full display in the Aggies’ final game, a loss to USC in the Regional Final. Freshcorn was forced to fill in as the starting pitcher with Aiden Sims out, and he did an admirable job, allowing just 2 runs through the first six innings.

With Texas A&M struggling at the plate, however, he took the loss and was pulled after allowing a three-run home run. While the story didn’t have the happy ending Aggie fans wanted, Freshcorn’s ability to step into the starting slot and deliver a performance worthy of a win shows just how valuable he is.

Freshcorn’s 12 saves were the third-highest single-season total by a Texas A&M pitcher, and his 14 career saves placed sixth in program history.

Freshcorn was one of 14 finalists named for the award, which former Texas A&M player Evan Aschenbeck won in 2024. The winner will be announced in Omaha on Friday, June 12, the same day the College Baseball World Series begins.
