The Houston Texans have failed to establish their running game over the last couple of years, which is limiting the offense and ultimately hampering the team’s playoff pursuit during the 2026 season. They rank 29th in the NFL with 84.7 rushing yards per game and 3.6 yards per carry. David Montgomery, who has been struggling immensely when on the field, is currently nursing a groin injury. Reinforcements may be needed, as the 2-5 squad’s comeback quest nears a crossroads.

The Texans welcomed in running back Josh Pitsenberger for a visit on Tuesday, per KPRC 2 Houston’s Aaron Wilson. The undrafted rookie spent time on the roster during training camp before suffering an ankle injury. Houston released him, but with limited options, a possible reunion could occur. Although Pitsenberger did not leave with a contract, the ‘door is not closed,” according to Wilson.

The 6-foot ball-carrier thrived with the Yale Bulldogs, rushing for 1,597 yards and 19 touchdowns in his senior season. If he can stay healthy, perhaps Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans and offensive coordinator Nick Caley can find opportunities for him. Neither Montgomery nor Woody marks have posted standout production. CJ Stroud will continue to face pressure if the RB room is unable to make a consistent impact.

There is no time to waste. Houston must post a more balanced offensive attack in Sunday’s road game against the win-less Los Angeles Chargers. Ryans will keep Pitsenberger in mind while also considering other players who can potentially add a spark.
